Often referred to as the “currency of the new millennium,” over $80 billion in retail gift cards are purchased by American consumers annually. Often these gift cards are not fully redeemed, leaving a small balance on the cards. Many times, these gift cards are discarded or forgotten altogether, and never redeemed in stores.
On average consumers will have 2.3 of these unused cards in their wallets every year. These “abandoned” cards total over 10% of all cards sold.
That’s $8 billion every year, or approximately 53 million Gift Cards every year lost, abandoned, forgotten and unused.
Over $21 million dollars, each and every day. The rising popularity of gift cards will increase the total of these “abandoned ” cards, and is expected to exceed $10 billion dollars by the end of the decade.
